Chris Hemsworth signs on for a crime thriller, Game of Thrones producers select a new Netflix series, and Talk to Me directors cast new horror film

Crime 101 (Amazon MGM Studios)

Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) will star in an adaptation of Don Winslow’s novella Crime 101. The story follows high-level jewel thefts that are taking place up and down the Pacific Coast, which police have linked to Colombian cartels. Detective Lou Lubesnick (Hemsworth) has other ideas, and he zeroes in on one perp, a thief looking for a final score. Written and directed by Bart Layton (American Animals), and co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios alongside Hemsworth himself, the project begins filming in Los Angeles in early September.

Death by Lightning (Netflix)

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, best known for overseeing Game of Thrones for HBO and the successful new Three Body Problem for Netflix, have established their newest project: the stranger-than-fiction true story of U.S. president James Garfield and his assassin Charles Guiteau. Based on the book Destiny Of The Republic by Candice Millard, the Netflix series will star Michael Shannon (George & Tammy, Nine Perfect Strangers) as President Garfield and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) as Guiteau. Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic) will direct the series, with filming set to begin in Budapest, Hungary in July.

Bring Her Back (A24)

Danny and Michael Philippou, who previously directed the summer horror hit Talk to Me for A24 last summer, have settled on a new project. Starring two-time Oscar nominee sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine, The Shape of Water), the film Bring Her Back will be the actresses’ first horror performance in nearly 20 years. Further details about its plot and characters remained under wraps, but he filmmaking duo will also be reuniting with producers Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton from Causeway Films, who previously produced Talk to Me. Shooting will take place in the duo’s native Australia beginning this June.
