Dakota and Elle Fanning co-star in World War II drama, Peter Berg directs another true-life story of American heroism, and Scrubs returns to TV with original cast
The Nightingale (Sony Pictures)
Movie star sisters Dakota Fanning (The Perfect Couple, Ripley) and Elle Fanning (A Complete Unknown) will act alongside each other on film for the first time in an adaptation of the The Nightingale. The bestselling historical fiction novel tells the story of two sisters who dare to embark on separate, dangerous paths during World War II in the fight for survival, love and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France. The project will be written by Dana Stevens (The Woman King) and directed by Michael Morris (To Leslie). The Fanning sisters will also produce alongside Sony Pictures, with filming scheduled in Los Angeles and Budapest, Hungary this fall.
The Mosquito Bowl (Netflix)
After Longe Survivor, Patriots Day and Deepwater Horizon, director Peter Berg will continue his series of real-life American heroism with the Mosquito Bowl. Based on Friday Night Lights author Buzz Bissinger’s true account, the story follows four elite college football stars who enlist as Marines after Pearl Harbor and play a legendary wartime football game on Guadalcanal in 1944—possibly their last. Actor Bill Skarsgård (It, Nosferatu) will headline the project, with Berg producing under his Film 44 banner. Filming will begin this August throughout Australia to replicate Hawaii.
Scrubs (20th Century Studios)
The beloved 2000s hospital comedy Scrubs is set to return to Hulu with creator Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Shrinking) and original stars Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke and John C. McGinley. The show is planned as a hybrid between a revival—revisiting original characters a decade and a half after the original series ended its run—and a reboot—revamping the original concept with new characters as the series is set to introduce new interns. Filming for the new season is scheduled for Vancouver, British Columbia in early October.
