Idris Elba returns for a Luther sequel, The Crown creator Peter Morgan eyes an adaptation of The Boys from Brazil, and Daisy Ridley set to star in thriller from Taken director
Untitled Luther Sequel (Netflix)
Luther, the hit BBC series that made Idris Elba an international star, will return with a second film installment for Netflix. Elba will return as Detective John Luther along with Ruth Wilson as serial killer/scientist Alice Morgan. In this sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun, Luther investigates the kidnapping of Callum Aldrich but is framed by killer David Robey and sent to prison. Escaping to stop Robey’s brutal crimes, Luther faces police interference and a mole within the force. Series creator Neil Cross will produce and write the script, with series regular Jamie Payne (Outlander, many Luther episodes) directing. Filming is scheduled to commence in London in early February.
The Boys from Brazil (Netflix)
Peter Morgan (creator of hit series The Crown) has found his next project—a new film adaptation of Ira Levin’s 1976 novel The Boys From Brazil. Previously adapted in a 1978 movie starring Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier, the story follows Nazi-hunter Yakov Liebermann as he races to stop concentration camp physician Josef Mengele in South American and his goal to create a new Fourth Reich. Jeremy Strong (Succession, The Apprentice) will star as Liebermann alongside August Diehl (A Hidden Life, Inglourious Basterds), Daniel Brühl (Rush, Inglourious Basterds) and Crown veteran Gillian Anderson. The international shoot is scheduled to begin in mid-December and take place in Berlin, London, Spain and Brazil.
The Good Samaritan (Highland Film Group)
Daisy Ridley (Star Wars, Young Woman and the Sea) is set to star in an action-thriller from Taken director Pierre Morel. According to press materials, “After rescuing a wounded stranger off the Indonesian coast, a power couple are dragged into a deadly conspiracy of pirates, corrupt officials and shifting loyalties, forcing Rosalind to team up with a mysterious private contractor to survive.” Shooting will take place in Queensland, Australia beginning in early April.
