Jamie Foxx films a courtroom drama in New Orleans, Kirsten Dunst joins Alex Garlands new sci-fi epic, and Julia Garner books her Ozark follow-up
The Burial (Amazon Studios)
An all-star cast that includes Jurnee Smollett (Underground, Lovecraft Country) and Oscar winners Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones will begin filming this new courtroom drama for Amazon Studios on March 28 in New Orleans. Based on a true story chronicled in a 1999 New Yorker article, the plot follows a bankrupt funeral home owner who hires flamboyant attorney Willie Gary (Foxx) to sue a rival businessman in a handshake deal gone wrong. Produced by Big Indie Pictures, the film will be directed by Maggie Betts as a follow-up to her 2017 film Novitate, which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
Civil War (A24)
Alex Garland, the novelist-turned-director whose recent works (Ex Machina, Annihilation, the upcoming Man) toe the line between science fiction and horror, has cast Kirsten Dunst as the lead in his upcoming project. Set to begin filming on March 31, Civil War is set in the near-future and co-stars Wagner Moura (Narcos), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune), and Cailee Spaeny (Mare of Easttown). The action epic will shoot primarily in Atlanta, with Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich and Gregory Goodman as producers.
Apartment 7A (Paramount Pictures)
Natalie Erika James’ follow-up to her acclaimed 2020 horror film Relic will be Apartment 7A, a psychological thriller starring Julia Garner. Besides starring in Ozark (which aired its final season on Netflix in January), Garner has established herself as a critical film favorite with her performance in 2019’s The Assistant. Apartment 7A will be co-written by James and her Relic writing partner Christian White along with Skylar James. Filming begins on March 15 in London, with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes co-producing.
