A distinctive Southern romance in Louisiana, an HBO revival in New York, and a potential return to a cult horror franchise in Vancouver are projects drawing attention to three North American filming destinations.
Girls (HBO Revival)
New York City is set to welcome back Girls, HBO’s comedy-drama about a group of friends navigating adulthood in the city. Creator Lena Dunham returns for a five-episode limited revival, joined by original cast members Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells. Judd Apatow also returns as executive producer. Production is scheduled to begin in summer 2027, approximately a decade after the original series ended.
The revival will catch up with the characters as they approach their forties, shifting the story beyond the messy twenties that defined the original six-season run. The original series was filmed primarily in Brooklyn, and the new production is expected to return to New York, though individual locations have not yet been announced.
For New York’s production community, the limited series brings back a property closely associated with the city’s contemporary identity. Familiar neighborhoods and interiors helped establish the original show’s distinctly New York atmosphere; revisiting the characters a decade later offers an opportunity to show how both the people and the city have changed. The production could also bring renewed activity to Brooklyn locations connected with the original series, though any specific return locations remain unconfirmed.
Hold On to Your Angels
South Louisiana is expected to provide the evocative setting for Hold On to Your Angels, a romantic drama from writer-director Benh Zeitlin, known for Beasts of the Southern Wild. Paul Mescal stars as a hell-bound outlaw opposite Jessie Buckley as a shepherd of lost souls in what has been described as an impossible love story unfolding against America’s disappearing landscapes. Production is scheduled to begin in February 2027.
The film reunites Mescal and Buckley following Hamnet and brings Plan B Entertainment together with producer Alex Coco’s Rapt Film. The Veterans is handling international sales, while CAA Media Finance represents domestic rights. Zeitlin’s connection to Louisiana is particularly significant: the landscape was central to Beasts of the Southern Wild, andGirls (HBO Revival) the new project again places the region’s distinctive environment at the heart of the story.
For South Louisiana, the production offers the prospect of feature-film spending and employment while showcasing landscapes that are increasingly vulnerable to environmental change. The area’s wetlands, waterways and rural communities are sure to provide a visual identity difficult to replicate elsewhere.
