This week’s Production Roundup takes us from a 1980s NASA story in Atlanta to a star-studded romantic comedy preparing to film in New York and a post-apocalyptic thriller that has already wrapped production in Kentucky.
Atmosphere
Atlanta is preparing to stand in for the world of NASA’s early Space Shuttle program in Atmosphere, a new feature film from Laika Entertainment, Big Indie Pictures and Circle M+P. The film follows Joan Goodwin, a reserved Rice University professor selected for NASA’s first class of women shuttle scientists in 1980, as she trains for spaceflight and finds a new sense of purpose. Production is scheduled to begin Oct. 19 in Atlanta’s Fulton County.
Written by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and produced by Travis Knight, Matt Levin, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Brad Mendelsohn and Jeremy Kipp Walker, the project brings a significant period-production component to Atlanta. The 1980 setting is likely to require extensive period work across locations, wardrobe, vehicles and production design, while the NASA subject matter adds opportunities for specialized technical and visual work. Atlanta’s established production infrastructure and Georgia’s film incentive—which provides a 20% base tax credit with a potential additional 10% uplift for qualifying productions—make the state a strong fit for a production of this scope.
Otherwise Engaged
New York will provide the backdrop for Otherwise Engaged, a new romantic comedy starring Halle Berry, Colin Firth, Zoë Kravitz and Jack Whitehall. The film centers on a couple whose wedding plans are thrown into chaos when their parents unexpectedly fall in love. Production is scheduled to begin in New York in March 2027.
The project marks the directorial debut of Suzanne Farwell, a longtime producer and collaborator of Nancy Meyers on films including The Holiday and It’s Complicated. Farwell co-wrote the screenplay with Gabriel Mizrahi and is producing alongside Susan Cartsonis and Laura Rister. With international sales launching through Mister Smith Entertainment at the 2026 TIFF Market and CAA Media Finance handling U.S. rights, the project arrives in New York as a fully packaged production with an internationally recognizable cast.
For New York’s production community, Otherwise Engaged adds another feature to a market supported by one of the country’s largest film incentive programs. The state’s Empire State film production credit currently provides a 30% credit on qualified production costs, with additional incentives available in certain circumstances.
