Jake Gyllenhaal headlines in new Shyamalan thriller, Idris Elba stars in a big rig trucker chase movie, and real-life sisters Kate and Rooney Mara portray sisters in a new film from Werner Herzog

Remain (Blinding Edge Pictures)

Jake Gyllenhaal (Road House, Presumed Innocent) will star in the latest film for thriller director M. Night Shyamalan (Trap, Old). Described as a “supernatural romantic thriller” with story contributions from global-bestselling novelist Nicholas Sparks, the project will be self-produced through Shyamalan’s own Blinding Edge Pictures, with distribution likely falling on Warner Bros. for a domestic release. Filming is set to commence on August 4 in Columbus, Ohio.

Hammer Down (Black Bear)

Idris Elba (The Harder They Fall, the Sonic the Hedgehog series) will star and produce in an action-thriller from Oscar-winning producer Charles Roven (Oppenheimer, the Dark Knight trilogy). Elba will play Mac, a big rig truck driver with a “no questions asked” policy about the goods he transports. When he takes his tenacious teenage daughter along for a job, they are tracked and attacked by a relentless group of criminals that will stop at nothing to secure the consignment he has been entrusted to deliver. Hammer down will be the feature directorial debut for Simon Hatt, James Gunn’s former assistant with producing credits on Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy. Filming will begin in Los Angeles in early July.

Bucking Fastard (Werner Herzog Filmproduktion)

Real-life sisters Kate (Class of ’09, A Teacher) and Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Women Talking) will play fictional sisters in the new film from legendary German director Werner Herzog. The plot will follow inseparable twin sisters Joan and Jean, who live on the fringes of society, and take inspiration from Freda and Greta Chaplin, twin sisters who became infamous in the 1980s for their obsessive behavior toward a neighbor that led to a restraining order. The film will explore themes of obsession, sisterhood and societal alienation. Herzog is set to both write and direct, with production commencing in early May in Ireland and Slovenia.
